PYL (dub) = originally inspired by the HUGELY UNDERRATED band, Hot Chocolate. I remember when Marco Bernardis was playing the baseline. I got so excited I picked him up and put his feet on the ceiling. He kept playing through. Things were different back then, people thought nothing of picking one another up and placing their feet on the ceiling of a music studio.
I’m just saying (you could do better) = it’s the closest thing I have ever made to a conceptual piece of music. I was listening to Tim Hecker’s Ravedeath, 1972 and Gavin Bryar’s Sinking of the Titanic on repeat day after day after day at the time. That mixed with the fact that Drake was completely omnipresent when I made it in 2013 brought me to the obvious conclusion that I should make a 15 minute ambient drone/tone poem about him and his complete ownership over the mainstream/memestream music conversation at the time. Everyone deals with things in their own way.
WHAT HAPPENED = straight up house track. As close to a dancefloor banger as I felt like making at the time. A very kind friend recorded some killer drums from his 909 for me to use in my productions. Pretty much immediately after that I was inspired to make something more club oriented. I think I did this one in about two sessions pre mix process.
cloud nine-nine = this was five different things before it become this track. It started off as a 135bpm rave banger with tons of humour. I am pretty sure there was an R Kelly sample in there from ‘turn back the hands of time’. I am so glad I didn’t commit to that. I kept evolving it because I would get bored of what it was/how it sounded. Eventually I slowed it right down and started making this chugg.
I have pulled from thousands of places to make these little beauties and if you want to go down that rabbit hole I have made a Spotify playlist. I will be updating it with tracks from my mixes, gigs as well as inspos so its worth a ♡ if you like that sort of thing. link
